The Caul or Caulback as it is commonly known is a well known feature of the River Nith. Its tumbling waters swell dramatically during heavy rain which if pushed back by a rising tide can cause severe flooding problems in the Whitesands area of Dumfries. This is a very popular print which shows the tumbling waters of the River Nith breaching the caulback. Occasionally wild salmon can be seen leaping up the caul trying to reach the upper part of the Nith to spawn.

'Caulback Caulback
I've looked intae yer waters deep and dark
and many just like me wha ken ye well
Can ne'er deny
they've been enchanted by yer spell.'

An extract from the poem Caulback in the book 'Sang O the Nith'
