Lincluden Abbey can just be seen faintly through the trees overlooking the Cairn a tributary of the River Nith. The original Abbey was built for Benedictine nuns by the grandly titled Uchtred Lord of Galloway in the 12th Century. It was converted into a college by the Earl of Douglas in the 14th Century.

' Frae 'Cluden's college hawthorned wood
upon the river's bend I've stood
and watched above the water's edge
thro gorse and bush and broken hedge..'

extract from the poem Lincluden College from the book 'Sang o the Nith'
