Built in 1275 as a memorial to her husband 'Sweetheart Abbey' is one of the most beautiful abbeys in Scotland. It's romantic links to 'Lady Devorgilla' and her husband are well documented and the poem 'Sweetheart Abbey' in the book 'Sang o the Nith' records in contemporay style the artist's perception of the ruins and what lies within the grounds.

On an evening when the sun sets low on the abbey it is quite a sight as the colour of the sandstone glows its warm response to beckoning dusk.

'Great archways rise from perfect green
broken by time into accidental harmony..'

extract from the poem 'Sweetheart Abbey'
